Conversation with my Younger Self

What would my 14-year old self say

If I told her that one day

She would be an addict.

No way, not me

She’d look bemused

Surely I had her confused

With someone else

This can’t, this won’t happen to someone as bright, talented and gifted as me

Now let me see

This is not how it works

There is no rhyme or reason

No one universal law

You think that because you have it all and more

That fate won’t come knocking on your door

Oh you arrogant, misguided, naïve fool

There’s not one rule

For you

And them

It’s a level playing field

Addiction doesn’t discriminate

You’ll come to realise this far too late

But not too late to have your eyes opened wide

To discover that in each and every one of us

There is a potential addict lurking inside.
